What happened before History? | The Humans that Lived before Us

Let's imagine we enter an antique book store. Hundreds of severe-looking volumes are lined up on the shelves. They have leather covers, red or dark green.

Let's look carefully: in a corner, all dusty, there is a very long row of huge volumes, almost a hundred books with thousands of pages full of figures. The title is written in golden letters: History of life on Earth, from its beginnings until today.

Humans. We have been around for a while now. When we think about our past we think about ancient civilizations, the pyramids, stuff like that. But this is only a tiny, tiny part of our history.

What happened before the human origins?

This time it is all about the journey of humanity, beginning tens of thousands of years ago, leading into the revolution of agriculture, to ancient high civilizations and the beginning of modern times, culminating in a vision for our future.

The story of human evolution began about 7 million years ago, when the lineages that lead to Homo sapiens and chimpanzees separated. Learn about the over 20 early human species that belong in our family tree and how the natural selection of certain physical and behavioral traits defined what it means to be human.
