This Provocative Painting Made the Artist a Legend

This painting titled The Luncheon on the Grass by Edouard Manet was outright rejected by critics in 1863. For the same reason it made Manet an absolute legend in the art world.

There were many reasons why people were outraged by this painting, but the biggest reason was the subject.

She was a real modern woman, not mythological, historical or biblical.

Manet was an absolute beast. Not just because he was an amazing artist, but also because he was brave enough to paint the world the way he saw it.

This painting is largely considered the turning point where he challenged centuries of rules made by the art establishment and opened the door for artists to paint what they wanted to, how they wanted to.

This is why he is widely considered the father of modern art.
