It opens with a soft vocal performance, backed by classical and then bass guitars, and transitions into a distorted pop-punk and rock production with electric guitars and snare drums. Eilish screams out the song's ultimate lyrics. It was released as the sixth single off her second studio album, Happier Than Ever, on July 30, 2021, through Darkroom and Interscope Records.

Upon release, many music journalists and fans of Eilish lauded "Happier Than Ever" as a highlight of the album. Critics directed praise towards Eilish's vocal performance, which they perceived as cathartic and louder compared to her previous work, as well as the rock-infused production. It was included as one of her best songs to date in online lists.

It peaked at number 11 and number 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and Global 200 charts, respectively. At the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, where Eilish performed the song, it received four nominations, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

The music video for "Happier Than Ever" premiered the same day as the album's release. In it, Eilish speaks to someone through a telephone, after which she climbs atop the roof and dances in the rain.

She performed the song live at television shows, such as The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and at the 2022 Coachella and Glastonbury festivals. Eilish included the track in the set list for her ongoing Happier Than Ever, The World Tour, which began on February 3, 2022.
