For those that want to learn about the finer details of the discovery, I’ve linked the full paper here: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-97778-3.pdf but this video is really a short overview to bring you some key points.
The archaeological site of Tall el-Hammam in Jordan has a long history, with origins in the Chalcolithic, between 4,300 and 3,600 BC, but it was during the Bronze Age era of this lost city, when something truly out of this world happened.
One day, 3,600 years ago, a cosmic airburst 1,000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb struck this ancient city, causing air temperatures to rise above 2,000 degrees Celsius. Clothing and wood immediately burst into flames. Swords, spears, mudbricks and pottery began to melt and in an instant, the entire city was on fire.
Was this event the inspiration for the Old Testament Biblical story of Sodom? There is no doubt it was viewed by people from miles around and I’m sure the event did have a lasting legacy for the ancient cultures of the Middle East. Watch the video to learn more!
